Volunteers have been a key component of The Salvation Army since the very beginning. In fact, the name "The Salvation Army" came about in 1878 when William Booth adapted it from a phrase he read in a report that described the organization as a "volunteer army." Without the year-round support of dedicated volunteers, it would be almost impossible to continue to provide services and programs.
